Ant

Overview

Ants are a common household pest in Malaysia, often invading kitchens and food storage areas in search of food.

Common household ants:

  • Sugar Ants (attracted to sweet food)

  • Black House Ants

  • Pharaoh Ants (small, fast spreading)

Biology

  • Egg → Larva → Pupa → Adult

  • Colonies grow steadily over time

  • Killing visible ants does not eliminate the colony

Signs of Infestation

Behaviour

  • Live in colonies with a queen

  • Follow scent trails to food sources

  • Highly attracted to sugar, grease, and protein

  • Quickly relocate if disturbed

Where They Hide

  • Visible ant trails (moving in lines)

  • Ants around food, sinks, or garbage

  • Small piles of soil (nesting)

  • Sudden increase in numbers

Risk & Impact

  • Wall cracks & crevices

  • Behind tiles & cabinets

  • Electrical sockets

  • Outdoor soil near buildings

How to Control

  • Contaminate food & surfaces

  • Difficult to control due to hidden nests

  • Can spread quickly across rooms or units

  • Problematic for homes, F&B, and offices

  • Keep areas clean (remove food sources)

  • Seal entry points

  • Target the nest, not just visible ants

Recommended Solutions

  • Residual spray for entry points & trails

  • Gel bait to eliminate the colony (worker ants
    bring back to nest)

  • Outdoor treatment for nesting areas

Common Mistakes

  • Spraying only visible ants (doesn’t kill the colony)

  • Using repellent that scatters the ants

  • Not identifying nesting source
