Millipede

Product Overview

Millipedes are harmless decomposers but can become a nuisance when they invade homes and gardens in large numbers. They feed on decaying organic matter and prefer moist environments.

Common species in Malaysia: 

  • Giant Millipede (Spirobolida spp.)

  • Flat-backed Millipede (Polydesmida spp.)

Biology

  • Egg → Juvenile → Adult

  • Most time spent in soil or decaying matter

  • Can live several years under suitable conditions

Signs of Infestation

  • Many millipedes appearing in gardens or near homes during rainy season

  • Trails of excrement on floors or outdoor surfaces

  • Millipedes entering homes through cracks or damp areas

  • Foul odor if crushed

Risk & Impact

  • Nuisance pest: invades homes in large numbers

  • Can damage seedlings or tender plants in gardens

  • Leaves unpleasant trails and odor

  • Generally not harmful to humans or pets

  • Residual spray for cracks, corners, and garden edges

  • Barrier treatment around house perimeter

  • Outdoor treatment in gardens and compost areas

Behaviour

  • Prefer damp gardens, compost, and mulch

  • Shelter during the day to avoid light

  • Enter homes searching for moisture

  • Active at night, slow-moving, feed on decaying matter

Where They Hide

  • Moist soil & leaf litter

  • Under stones & logs

  • Wall cracks & damp corners

How to Control

  • Reduce moisture and dampness around home

  • Remove leaf litter, mulch, and decaying organic matter

  • Seal entry points into homes

  • Apply appropriate residual insecticide in outdoor and indoor hiding areas

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring outdoor moisture and shelter areas

  • Only treating indoors after they appear

  • Crushing them, which can release unpleasant odor
