Mosquito
Overview
Mosquitoes are a major public health concern in Malaysia, breeding in stagnant water and transmitting serious diseases.
Common species:
-
Aedes aegypti (primary dengue vector)
-
Aedes albopictus (outdoor secondary dengue vector)
-
Culex quinquefasciatus (night-biting, nuisance)
-
Anopheles spp. (malaria vector)
Biology
-
Egg → Larva → Pupa → Adult
-
Completes in as fast as 7–10 days
-
Requires water for breeding
Behaviour
-
Aedes sp.: Active during daytime (morning & late evening), breeds in manmade containers
-
Culex sp: Active at night, breeds in brackish water such as sewage, catch basins, septic tanks, and polluted water
-
Anopheles sp.: Active at night, prefers clean water
-
Strongly attracted to human body heat & CO₂
Signs of Infestation
Where They Breed & Hide
-
Frequent mosquito bites
-
Mosquitoes resting on walls or ceilings
-
Larvae in stagnant water
-
Increased activity during dawn, dusk, or night
-
Stagnant water (containers, drains, gutters)
-
Flower pots & water trays
-
Water tanks & discarded items
-
Shaded vegetation & indoor corners
Risk & Impact
How to Control
-
Dengue, Zika (Aedes sp.)
-
Malaria (Anopheles sp.)
-
Filariasis (Culex sp.)
-
Serious concern for residential areas, construction sites, and public spaces
-
Eliminate stagnant water (source reduction)
-
Maintain proper drainage
-
Target both larvae and adult mosquitoes
Recommended Solutions
-
Larvicide for water bodies & drains
-
Residual spray for resting surfaces
-
ULV / fogging for adult mosquito control
Common Mistakes
-
Only fogging without larval control
-
Ignoring small water sources
-
Inconsistent treatment
