Overview

Rodents are destructive pests that contaminate food, spread disease, and cause structural damage. They are highly adaptable and can thrive in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Common species:

  • Norway Rat (Rattus norvegicus)

  • Roof Rat (Rattus rattus)

  • House Shrew (Suncus murinus)

Biology

  • Rapid reproduction (multiple litters per year)

  • Short gestation period → fast population growth

  • Infestation can escalate quickly if untreated

Behaviour

  • Norway Rat: Ground-dwelling, burrows, prefers moist areas

  • Roof Rat: Excellent climber, moves along pipes, cables, beams

  • House Shrew: Fast-moving, insect-feeding, active day & night

Signs of Infestation

Where They Hide

  • Droppings (small, dark pellets)

  • Gnaw marks on food packaging, cables, wood

  • Scratching noises (especially at night)

  • Strong ammonia-like odor (urine)

  • Roof Rat: Ceilings, roofs, rafters, high shelves

  • House Shrew: Wall voids, storage areas, cluttered spaces

How to Control

  • Contaminates food & surfaces

  • Spreads diseases (e.g. leptospirosis, salmonella)

  • Damages wiring → fire hazard

  • Serious issue for F&B, warehouses, and buildings

  • Eliminate food and water sources

  • Seal entry points (proofing)

  • Target nesting and movement areas
